Common Plumbing Accessories

The basics of domestic plumbing systems are easy to understand but the application of various plumbing fittings can prove quite difficult to grasp. Only a good plumber knows all the plumbing components and their utilities. In order to keep everything up and running, the right kind of plumbing fittings need to be in place. There are different types, sizes of drainage tools in Sydney in many different materials. The most commonly used plumbing accessories are:

a) Adaptors- They are used to connect different sized pipes and can convert a male pipe into a female, and vice versa since, they have both male and female ends. Adaptors can have threaded or non-threaded ends that can then be welded, soldered or glued to the pipe.

b) Barbs- They are used to connect hoses to pipes and male at one end and have a tapered and ridged cone at the other. Plastic barbs carry cold and brass barbs carry hot water.

c) Union- They are designed to connect two pipes with the possibility of being detached without damage or deformation to the pipes. They contain nuts, male end, and female end. The nut is used to join the male and female ends.

d) Couplings- They are used to repair a pipe that has broken or is leaking by connecting two identical pipes. These cannot be detached without damage to the pipes. They have female threads or are un-threaded.

e) Nipple- It is a short and one of the most important drainage tools in Sydney which connects pipes to appliances and also, two straight pipe runs. It has two male ends.

f) Cross- They are four-way fittings consisting of three inlets and one outlet or vice-versa and often have a solvent-welded socket or female-threaded ends.

g) Tee- They are three-way fittings having a 90-degree branch at the centre and are sturdier than the cross fitting. It has an inlet and outlet.

h) Elbow- They are curved, 45 or 90 degrees angled fittings that are used to change flow directions.

i) Wyes- Looking like ‘Y’, having a 45-degree branch to reduce turbulence and friction, these connect vertical pipes to horizontal ones.

j) Reducer- These are special fittings used to reduce flow and are of 2 types. A concentric reducer is used to join two pipes on the same axis, while an eccentric reducer is used to join pipes of different diameters.

k) Mechanical Sleeve- This is an easy to install fitting which is used to join two pipes using a screw or other device. It is flexible and can be used in misalignments in difficult places. Generally made up of rubber, it’s inserted inside a metal clamp to form a tight seal.

l) Valves- They are used to regulate or stop the flow of fluids.

Plumbing system is essentially a branch network of pipes and fittings. When you are buying any drainage tools in Sydney for domestic plumbing, always check the size and standard of the materials. It’s also of utmost importance to know which material is correct for the fittings suitable for your purpose.
